That’s  Josephine,  Napoleon’s first wife that he divorced later because she could not have any more children. She had two children from her first marriage.
Her first husband had been guillotined along with other aristocrats during the revolution. Those were hard times.

That is the letter that Josephine wrote to announce her divorce and explain its reasons, most probably dictated by Napoleon himself.

This is the French text and its translation.

She loved luxuries and every kind of folly, but the people liked and admired her. Below you see a bathroom and a bedroom of Josephine’s two children.

Josephine de Beauharnais came from a wealthy French family. They had a plantation in Latin America, but a hurricane destroyed it. Josephine came to Paris poor and alone and  worked her way up by befriending  influential men.

This is the painting of a truly  famous moment. Napoleon crowns himslf in the presence of the Pope and then also crowns Josephine. The painting is by Jacques Louis David.

There is a 4 mega version at
http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/0/08/Jacques-Louis_David%2C_The_Coronation_of_Napoleon_edit.jpg.

The pope (seated, on the right, with just a little white cap on) seems absent-minded and those around him look dull or even somewhat sinister, but there is one (with a hood) that seems to be thinking something. All of these are real portraits.

Those ladies that hold up the trail of fur ! They think he is holy.

You can see how very much everyone around was impressed by le petit  corporal, the little corporal, as he was known among his soldiers who adored him, died for him, would have died for him many times over if that had been a choice.

He left nearly half a million of them dead in the snow of Russia and they still wanted him back.
