Best Age to Learn a Language June 12, 2016

In theory young people learn fast, but they also forget  easily. They cannot see the need for any active maintenance strategy.

Even so, the best time to learn a language is between 12 and 26.

Kids do English or Spanish for ten or twelve years, but as soon as they are no longer supervised by parents and teachers they quit and they become again beginners.

For many reasons, most learners can’t find a way to maintain their level.   Language skills are not permanent.  Any level reached has to be maintained by continuous training.

The relevant diplomas are valid for only two years.

To maintain a high level you need to practice for several hours every week.

For this reason your best option is not bilingual fluency, but a medium level that can be kept up at a minimal effort of writing, reading or even copying for less than an hour a week, preferably in 2 or 3 sessions, not all at once. –.

Women learn languages more easily or maybe just more willingly than men, probably not because they are more intelligent, but because they spend more time thinking things over and talking.
