1942

where are their parents?

The Germans started to assassinate their prisoners in special jails created mostly outside Germany according to published but not explicit policy.
The prisoners were nearly all Jewish from all of Europe.

The policy  could not be mentioned on the telephone and code words had to be used in written communications.
Goebbels for instance, even in his personal dairy, uses euphemisms of the sarcastic kind.

This omits events in the oceans and in Asia.

Look at the graph below to see how a war that started on very narrow notions in Europe killed many million people as far away as China and Japan:

See Hiroshima: 6th August, 1945 for photos and a report of the nuclear bombing of Hiroshima.

A, I’m sorry and I know it’s not polite to contradict but there a few samll inexact data: end of the WWI – nov. 1918; Hitler comes to power as Reichcancellar in 1933 not in 1935. (Professional deformation of the ex- history teacher; sorry again…)

2. cantueso - November 17, 2007

Thank you for the corrections. I will check my sources and correct later.

Of course I consider corrections very polite, first of all towards other readers. How otherwise would I find out something is wrong?

3. 100swallows - May 12, 2008

I think you should mention the Blitz invasion of the Low Countries and the fall of France, because of its impact on world opinion. I realize that you try to keep the timeline as short as possible, but you did mention how the Germans overran Czechoslovakia and Poland.

4. cantueso - May 13, 2008

To 100swallows

You are right. France had been included in a former version and then got omitted by accident, when I was trying to figure out what is meant by “the Low Countries”. I do have a book with historical maps, but forgot to have a look.

5. k. wangler - August 5, 2009

Why don’t you mention Poland where the Russians double-crossed the Germans and the Poles?

cantueso - August 13, 2010

Because I don’t know this story very well and it is too complicated for this post

6. gpcox - December 25, 2012

Excellent idea for a post.

7. Carl D'Agostino - October 21, 2013

Great post, esp the Rockwell painting.
