As a preacher Hemingway is just as bad, but  Steinbeck comes through as the better thinker of the two, and the stories are great to read, The Grapes of Wrath greater than remembered, in spite of all the sermons that are  easy to skip. Meanwhile,The Grapes of Wrath has been banned by school boards and burned twice in Salinas.

It is about a family of small farmers who get foreclosed, have to leave and, along with many others, believe that in distant California they will find work and a place to live.

They sell their few belongings to buy an old car to try and drive all across the US and the mountains to get to the promised land.

They get there and discover that they have been fooled. There are hundreds of  men competing for any job.

Grapes of Wrath is a Biblical expression meaning the consequences of deep anger.
