The sky is not blue. It is the light of the sun with the red and green wavelengths  absorbed by the gas molecules that give the illusion of blue. The sky, by itself, has no color.
Look at a clear sky at night. What color is it?
Look at the sky at sunset. What color is it?

When the water vapor content of the sky changes so does the color. Before a nasty storm the sky takes on a greenish purple hue because the concentration of water vapor has increased.

So to explain why the sky looks blue one must know the absorbtion spectrum of the oxygen, nitrogen, carbon-dioxide and water vapor as well as the blackbody spectrum of the sun.

Just looking is not sufficient. There
are thousands of optical illusions which prove that just looking is not
sufficient.
