The mistakes are sorted out by order of magnitude :

    1.  Keeping lots of old notes
    2.  Zero maintenance
    3.  Learning by heart
    4.  Dreaming of the speak – speak – speak method
    5.  Dreaming of a crash course

@3.

A violinist has to learn by heart, but little.  Most of the learning is in  HOW to handle the instrument.  It is the same with languages.

Kids learn intuitively, but most adults have to sit down with a book.

@5.

The realistic scenario is about 10 minutes a day for the next two or three years on a bit of text reading, writing and listening.

Nobody ever does that? Never heard of it? Of course not. You hear  only of  methods that can be bought.

HOWEVER:

It does pay to learn just a little, just a few words or expressions to try out in New York, Florida, or abroad.   Phrase lists ?
