The letters are as old as ours and go back to the same sources, to the Greeks and beyond, to the Egyptians or Phoenicians. A good example is our letter A which is the same in Russian:

Originally it was the picture of an ox head with its horns and was called Aleph. The Greeks used it to represent Alpha. The Romans used it as A.

The last word is kuknya which is a kitchen, and just above it is bannaya, which is bathroom.

Saints Cyril and Methodius

Below is a graph to show where the Cyrillic alphabet is used. —

According to tradition it was invented by the two Saints of the picture, Cyril and Methodius, who went to Russia as missionaries more than 1100 years ago.

The Cyrillic alphabet is one of my favorites. It looks so intimidating, but once you get the hang of it, it is actually quite easy to read :)
