Why are Latins very bad ESL learners? December 14, 2014

Even by parents and teachers they are often  taught that they can overcome difficulties by willpower but……

Language learning does not depend on knowledge, but on reflexes. These develop only through simple, light and frequent exercise.

                                            However, reflexes depend on age. After a certain age, around 35 or so, reflexes begin to deteriorate. In other words,  aptitude shrinks just as will power keeps growing.

Besides, naturaly,
to the extent that people try to learn a language by memorizing, their reflexes get blocked.

This is also why women are better at languages.
Men look for content and measurable progress, while women enjoy questions of form and refinement.

Postscript
I have been told that the Portuguese do learn English.
Of course, there is an additional element, but it is touchy:  old political animosities turning into cultural barbwire.
