Before 4000 BC ………. The Creation ………. …… Genesis 1

Here is Man giving names to all the animals, which means that he is held accountable for the way he classifies things, and all the animals in this drawing seem to understand that.

Clever animals!

.

Before 4000 BC ………. The Fall of Man …….  Genesis 3

Next comes the Fall or how we got thrown out of Paradise.

The artist did not take the story too literally, as you can see by the festive look he gave the serpent and by the diachronic (or time-transgressive) basket that Eve carries to get more apples.

.

But the Serpent has ears. It is all ears and very attentive.

.

Cain was envious of his brother and killed him.

Before 3000 BC ………. The Great Flood ……. ….. Genesis 7

Next came the great flood.

Noah had to build a ship to save some of God’s creation:

(According to Wikipedia, an “ark” is not a type of ship. Only Noah’s ship is called an “ark”. Otherwise, an ark was a sacred chest where the Jewish law was kept.)

.

……………………………………………………………………………………………………….
.

This is again Noah’s Ark. The animals are all inside, and it would be nice to see them looking out.

But the storm is wild and the waves might wash them overboard.

It was a sketch for a painting that never came off.

It also shows what an idea looks like before it is worked into something presentable. However, if I knew how to draw I would leave it just like that.

……………………………………………………………………………………………………….

.

There is, too, a more analytical approach to the accounts of this evacuation showing the magnitude of the logistics involved:

The elephants are pulling transportation for the mini creatures.

Noah had to think of everything even while the water levels were rising.

Below is the complete story from a mosaic at the Monreale cathedral in Sicily, Italy. You can see Noah building his ship and floating on the flood and landing and unloading.

And how the story continues with the construction of that tower.

Before 2100 BC ………. The Tower of Babel…….  Genesis 11

Once they had recovered from the deluge, they became very active again and developed lots of new technologies to try out new things. Sometimes they failed:

It was going to be a skyscraper. The painting is by Brueghel.

 God Sends Abram to Egypt
Tigris Euphrates 2

This is the region of the two great rivers, Tigris and Euphrates.
.

.

This region is also called The Fertile Crescent because it is curved like the new moon

2091 BC ………. God Sends Abram to Egypt………. Genesis 12

This is where the important part of the Bible starts.

Besides Fertile Crescent, it is also known as the cradle of civilization and as Mesopotamia meaning the Land between the rivers, and now it is called Iraq.

It is where Abraham came from. With his famiy and his herds he traveled from Ur in Babylonia to Palestine.

.

1906 BC ………. Jacob Wrestles with God ………. ……Genesis 32

Abraham had a grandson called Jacob.

Jacob fought with the angel and the angel re-named him Israel. The drawing is by Gustave Doré.

……………………………………………………………………………………………………….

.

1928 BC ………. Jacob’s vision of a ladder………. …… Genesis 28:10

Jacob had a dream where he saw angels go up and down between Heaven and Earth on a ladder.

The text says he had a stone for a pillow.

……………………………………………………………………………………………………….

.

1898 BC ………. Joseph Sold into Slavery………. Genesis 37:25

And Jacob made for his son Joseph a beautiful coat that incited his brothers’ envy.

So they sold him to merchants who took him to Egypt where he became the Pharaoh’s main adviser.

When his family was threatened by drought and famine, he was able to invite them all to come over and join him in Egypt.

But Joseph and his family died, and a few generations later their descendants became the Pharaoh’s slaves.

……………………………………………………………………………………………………….

.

1539 BC ………. Pharaoh Orders Firstborn killed …. Exodus 1:22

And the Pharaoh gave orders to kill even the babies.

So a mother hid her child in a basket among the reeds, and a princess of Egypt found him and took him home. She called him Moses.

.

This is how Moses was educated as an Egyptian prince so that later he could lead the Jewish people when they fled from Egypt, as depicted by Marc Chagall :

Chagall’s famous painting, too, is diachronic (or time-transgressive), as it includes 20th century history.

1446 BC ………. The Exodus Begins……… Exodus 13 – 18

.

Moses led the Jews out of Egypt and through the desert where God gave them the Law.

The Law was engraved on stone plates and it was short so that it could get to be known in all the world.

There was a population count, and all the people had to go to their hometown to be included in the census. Because of this edict, Mary and Joseph, who were living in Nazareth, had to travel to Bethlehem.

Here they are arriving at the offices of the Civil Registrar in Bethlehem.

From Wikipedia:

The name “Bethlehem” is derived from the Hebrew “Beit Lechem — House of Bread,” and its fields of grain  where Ruth gleaned her wheat for her mother-in-law Naomi and where she met her eventual husband, Boaz.

According to the Bible, Ruth’s great-grandson David was born in Bethlehem where he was anointed as king.

5 BC ………. Visit of the Magi Matthew 2

Three Kings  have come from the East following a bright star. —

They had been riding for a long time, and they were tired and would have overslept, but an angel came and woke them up. — The picture is from  the collection of The Paradox Place .

In some places — for instance here, in Spain — Christmas is not as festive as January 6, the day when the Kings bring their presents to the children and to many other people.

In many countries, the day is called Epiphany of the Lord.  I have been told it is a most important celebration, but I had to google for it, as I had never heard of it, because now people get to know very little about each other, as each has to deal with too many.

The festivity is also called Twelfth Day and Three Kings Day.
