Toulouse-Lautrec came from an aristocratic family.
When he was 13, he broke both of his thigh bones. The fractures did not heal right and his legs did not grow anymore, but he became a painter and a lithographer, and his family used their influence to help him get good teachers in Paris.

Montmartre was and still is  famous for its night life, and Toulouse Lautrec loved all the nonsense going on in those bars and clubs.

.

Unlike the impressionist artists, he  never did landscapes, but instead drew  the dancers,  poets, addicts, and drinkers, especially the women. For some reason however his art was never thought to be topnotch.

*** Lithography:  A printing method. Originally they used a flat piece of stone and   etched it  with an acid to form a surface that would  transfer ink to the paper. Now generally a metal plate is used.
