It is a play about a girl who has to marry a man that she does not want.
She lives in a small town where people get to know everything about everybody else.

On the day of her marriage she runs away with her former boyfriend.

The play begins with the groom talking to his mother. She is a widow. She lost her husband and a son in a knife fight.

He wants her consent. And she has to negotiate the terms of the engagement:  what will her dowery be, how much land, how many sheep. People say that she has been seen with another boyfriend.
