A little bit El Greco and lots of melodrama, but unlike other people in her profession, she  shakes the spell off when the contract expires and she gets paid..

And she always kept the distance that says: “This is showbiz. It is not real life. It is entertainment, making fun of life” …while also showing its meanest side.

Looking like a schoolteacher! –  which at least explains how she was able to learn English and reach a level allowing her spontaneously to use expressions like “every once in a while” and “I don’t approach it that way”. In her televised interview with David Letterman she displays more of her natural wit and presence of mind than even a native English speaker can be expected to show on stage.

Her accent is not brilliant, but it cannot have been her priority, for though she is an actress, there is nothing false about her. She dresses up her face, but not the sound of her voice.

Screenshot and poster from “Jamón”. She was 18 at the time.

Representing Castilla La Mancha, the region where Almodovar is from, where the ground is poor, water scarce, industry absent. There are vineyards, donkeys, melon fields where the melons get stolen at night, little towns where there is a church, several banks and a dozen bars.

She is not from there but from Alcobendas, a faceless industrial town north of Madrid.

There are countless photos of this kind. Her art is in comedy, and she is mostly clowning even when paid to show off her physique or the beauty of her eyes.

Some think it’s all in her eyes.

But there is also that smile. Watch her being interviewed by David Letterman
